Course Name: 21st Century Technology Skills


Description: This ten-week course encompasses the critical skills that will allow our students to meet the national, state, and local technology standards and prepare them to be valuable members of the global community.

The course will cover four primary components:
1. **Digital Citizenship** : 3 weeks
  • a. Responsible use (Appropriate and inappropriate use)
  • b. Digital communication (RSS, blogs, wikis, e-mail, IM)
  • c. Digital ethics and etiquette
  • d. Digital rights and responsibilities (plagiarism, copyright)
  • e. Digital commerce (purchasing, advertising)
  • f. Digital health and wellness (ergonomics)

2. **Understanding computers** : 3 weeks
  • a. Understanding the parts of a computer
  • b. How computers store and retrieve information
  • c. How the operating system works
  • d. File management

3. **Digital Literacy** : 2 week
  • a. Understanding the grammar of the Internet
  • b. Studying fact from fiction on the web—evaluating the value of a website
  • c. Critical thinking when using the Internet
  • d. Choosing appropriate technology tools to problem-solve
  • e. Research fluency—advanced research techniques
  • f. File formats, file size, image size

4. **Cyber Safety** : 2 weeks
  • a. Private identity
  • b. Cyberbullying
  • c. Chat, IM, and e-mail safety

Students will learn through hands-on activities and projects that incorporate the newest computer technologies.
